In December 2024, Vietnam’s tuna export value soared to nearly $886 million, marking a remarkable 17% increase compared to December 2023. The country’s annual tuna export volume reached a total of $998.9 million, also reflecting a 17% year-on-year growth. This positive trend underscores Vietnam’s competitive presence in the global tuna market.
Tuna exports to the European Union showed a strong rebound, signaling an upward trajectory after a challenging period. Meanwhile, exports to Canada experienced a notable 40% surge in the final two months of 2024, reversing a previous decline. The resurgence in these markets, alongside strong demand from other regions, has positioned Vietnam’s tuna industry for continued growth and enhanced global market positioning.
However, not all markets experienced growth. Tuna exports to Japan and Israel faced significant declines, particularly in the last quarter of 2024. Exports to Japan fell by 27% in December, and exports to Israel dropped by 28%, reflecting the complexities and volatility of global trade dynamics.
Despite these challenges, Vietnam’s tuna industry remains resilient. Experts predict that favorable tariff policies in key markets and increased global demand will drive further expansion in 2025. The country’s tuna exports now reach nearly 140 countries worldwide, thanks to the successful implementation of the “Pilot held mining, purchasing, processing, and consumption of tuna in the chain” project in key provinces like Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, and Khanh Hoa. The project has been instrumental in stabilizing prices and improving the incomes of local fishermen.
In these three provinces, home to the country’s largest tuna fisheries, nearly 2,400 vessels primarily harvest yellowfin, bigeye, and skipjack tuna. With a production volume of over 92,000 tons in 2016, the tuna sector plays a critical role in the nation’s seafood export sector, contributing over $500 million annually.
Looking ahead, Vietnam’s tuna industry seems poised for strong growth, bolstered by strategic market insights and evolving trade agreements.
