Vietnam Aims to Become Global Leader in Sustainable Seafood Exports by 2030

Currently ranked as the world’s third-largest seafood exporter, Vietnam has set its sights on becoming the global leader in sustainable seafood exports by 2030. Under a national strategy focused on modernization and sustainable growth, the country plans to achieve export revenues between $14 and $16 billion (approximately RMB 114.88 billion).

With a market share exceeding 7% of the global seafood trade, Vietnam is not only working to solidify its international presence but also aims to transform its entire seafood value chain through innovation, sustainability, and integration, according to TV BRICS partner, the Vietnam News Agency.

Official data highlight that the future development of Vietnam’s seafood sector will depend increasingly on its ability to meet evolving global standards—particularly in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) areas—rather than simply on export volume.

Vietnam’s export drive is also supported by preferential tariffs under multiple free trade agreements, which have improved market access and broadened sourcing options. Strategic recommendations include developing specialized aquaculture zones for key species, implementing clear zoning for both industrial and traditional farming areas, and integrating seaports, cold storage facilities, and processing plants.

Key areas of focus also include promoting the issuance of farm identification codes and using artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor environmental conditions and disease outbreaks in real time.

As 2030 approaches, Vietnam’s seafood industry is positioning itself at the forefront of both scale and sustainability—building a future-ready sector that not only meets growing global demand but also sets new benchmarks for innovation and responsibility in seafood production.
