Hainan’s aquatic export industry continues its remarkable growth in 2024, underpinned by the province’s flagship product—tilapia. According to Haikou Customs, Hainan exported 142,000 tons of aquatic products in the first 10 months, marking a 9.2% year-on-year increase. Export value rose even more significantly, up 28.4% to reach 3.19 billion yuan, setting a record high for the period.
Tilapia’s Dominance in Hainan’s Export Landscape
Tilapia remains the cornerstone of Hainan’s aquatic exports, accounting for over 90% of total shipments. In the first half of 2024 alone, tilapia exports saw substantial growth. Hainan exported 79,000 tons of aquatic products, an 8.7% increase year-on-year, while export value surged 24.7% to 1.81 billion yuan, also a record for the period.
The international market highly values Hainan’s tilapia for its superior quality and taste. Some companies exported over 6,400 tons of tilapia to markets in the United States, the European Union, and other regions in the first half of the year. Favorable climatic conditions in Hainan enable high-quality tilapia production, cementing its reputation as a leading global supplier.
Farmers’ Gains Amid Price Challenges
Despite recent declines in tilapia prices, farmers in Hainan have benefited from rising export volumes. Higher demand in international markets offsets price pressures, ensuring profitability. Moreover, government and customs initiatives have provided crucial support. Haikou Customs implemented advanced measures, such as a “source control—conformity assessment—process monitoring” model and expedited customs clearance services, ensuring “zero delay” and reduced costs for exporters.
Farmers and enterprises have also gained from government-backed training sessions and seminars, which provide essential market insights and policy updates, helping them navigate trade risks effectively.

With strong international demand, government support, and modern industrial park development, Hainan is poised for continued success.
