Shanghai, September 18th – Shanghai Customs announced a significant milestone in the city’s aquatic product exports as a local company successfully shipped chilled fish products to France. This marks the first-ever export of Shanghai-made chilled aquatic products to the European Union (EU), signaling a “zero breakthrough” for the sector.
Under the supervision of Pudong Customs, a subsidiary of Shanghai Customs, five varieties of chilled fish weighing a total of 296 kg were delivered to France. This accomplishment not only opens new avenues for Shanghai’s aquatic industry but also establishes a benchmark for future chilled seafood exports from the region.
Breaking into High-Standard Markets
In recent years, Shanghai Customs has actively supported Chinese-made chilled aquatic products in their bid to access international markets. They have been optimizing the overseas registration recommendation process, implementing hierarchical classification management, and providing targeted support to meet the stringent standards of foreign markets.
According to the customs authorities, their efforts include thorough research on technical trade barriers and comprehensive guidance for food exports to countries and regions with strict registration requirements, such as the EU. By streamlining procedures, shortening registration times, and accepting third-party certification results, Shanghai Customs has facilitated the market entry for enterprises with good credit and manageable risks.
Enhancing Export Potential
“Chilled aquatic products offer a superior taste compared to frozen alternatives and are highly favored by overseas Chinese communities. This inspired us to consider exporting to the EU market,” said a representative from the company behind the milestone shipment.
Upon understanding the company’s export ambitions, Pudong Customs provided step-by-step guidance to ensure all EU-specific regulations were met. This involved reviewing the export food quality management system, optimizing the production process, and ensuring all safety and hygiene requirements were fulfilled.
Growing Export Volume
The successful shipment to France is part of a broader growth in Shanghai’s aquatic product exports. According to recent statistics, in the first eight months of this year alone, Shanghai Customs supervised the export of 341.5 tons of aquatic products, including chilled monkfish liver and various chilled fish products.
This breakthrough in chilled fish exports to the EU is expected to encourage more companies to explore new markets and improve the competitiveness of Shanghai’s aquatic products on a global scale. As Shanghai continues to strengthen its export procedures and regulations, the city is poised to become a key player in the international chilled seafood market.
