After some interruptions in the previous years, the 26th China Fisheries and Seafood Expo is ready to kick off this month.
The CFSE is the biggest gathering for seafood professionals worldwide, providing opportunities for business expansion in the seafood market. CFSE gathers every year importers, distributors, retailers, and food service operators, as well as seafood processing companies, aquaculture producers, and fishing fleet operators from all around the world.
China: The Epicentre of the Seafood Industry
In addition to being the largest producer and exporter of aquaculture products globally (OECD-FAO, 2021). China also consumes the most fish and seafood globally (USDA, 2019). The per capita consumption of seafood is rising quickly in China as consumers spend more money on high-quality, added-value fish and seafood items.
An essential component of China’s food security plan has been ensuring an inexpensive and ample supply of fish and seafood. Mariculture is viewed as a “blue granary” that can assist in addressing China’s problems with food security.
From 2016 to 2020, China’s total retail sales of fish and seafood increased in value at a CAGR of 10.3%, reaching US$89.2 billion (42,267,4 thousand metric tonnes). By 2025, is projected to rise by 5.8%, reaching US$100.6 billion (50,015.3 thousand metric tonnes). Retail sales in 2020 reveal that Chinese customers favour fresh fish and seafood as well as frozen processed seafood.
Seafood business in Qingdao
The seafood business is flourishing in Qingdao as a result of the region’s unprecedented economic growth.
Over a third of China’s total annual international seafood commerce is conducted in Qingdao. Imports and exports seafood worth over USD 8 billion annually.
Since Qingdao has an expanding population of processors and seafood importers, it was chosen as the venue for the first CFSE in 1996. Since 2014, is officially the venue for every year’s fair.
China Fisheries & Seafood Expo relocated to its new location in the Greater Qingdao Metropolitan Area’s Hongdao Economic Zone in 2021. It features striking design, cutting-edge services, and space for 6,100 standard-sized booths over 10 display halls.

The CFSE is the largest seafood exhibition in Asia and the most dynamic seafood fair in the world.
A record number of visitors—more than 33,000—flocked to the Qingdao fair in 2018. The success of the CFSE was even greater in 2019. In that year, the event brought together over 1,700 companies from 52 countries and sold out all 10 exhibit rooms. The exhibit space increased by 22% from the 2018 event to 45,000 square meters.
The show organizers of the CFSE are expecting to break records in 2023. More than 30,000 fish industry professionals from more than 88 countries will participate this year.
Fresh and frozen fish, seafood processors who specialize in raw material, value-added and pre-packaged seafood products, packaging and processing equipment, freight forwarding and logistics, aquaculture equipment, and feed will all be on display at the 26th CFSE.
A wide range of seafood products will be available at the exhibition such as panga, tilapia, salmon, trout, barracuda, catfish, croaker, grouper, mackerel, marlin, pompano, ribbonfish, sea bream, shark, snapper, trevally, tuna, clam, crab, shrimp, cuttlefish, octopus, squid, hake, sardines, conch, lobster, oyster, jellyfish, sea cucumber, and more.
