Fishing Boats Set Sail After Summer Fishing Ban Lifted

On August 1, 2024 marks the end of the 3-month summer fishing Ban the East China Sea, and the partial lifting of the ban has seen a total of 146 Chongming fishing boats setting sail. The first catch of the season is expected to arrive at Changxing Hengsha fishing port as early as tomorrow or the day after, bringing fresh seafood back to the market.

On this summer morning, the breeze gently sweeps across Changxing Hengsha fishing port. A large number of fishing boats are moored in an orderly manner, their red flags fluttering in the wind, creating a picturesque scene when viewed from above. The fishermen are busy with final preparations before setting sail, eagerly anticipating a bountiful return.

The waterway buzzes with the roar of engines as the “open fishing” horn officially sounds. Under the escort of law enforcement vessels, the 146 fishing boats from Chongming break the calm waters, leaving white trails behind them as they head towards the East China Sea. The sight of thousands of sails competing against each other is nothing short of spectacular.

In the days leading up to the lifting of the ban, fishermen at Dongsha Fishing Port in Dongtou District were seen preparing for the start of the fishing season, shuttling between the dock and fishing boats to transport materials, and sorting nets and fishing gear. Fishing boats, docked in an orderly manner, are ready to set sail.

To ensure safety and orderly fishery production, the city’s fishery administration departments conducted comprehensive inspections of the fishing boat crew, operating nets, fishing boat certificates, safety and life-saving equipment, and communication and navigation equipment. Any issues were promptly addressed to ensure the fishing boats went out to sea “without disease.” Additionally, efforts to upgrade and transform fishing vessels, reduce ship numbers, convert production, and enhance facilities and equipment have been promoted to protect maritime operations.

“First, we’ll go to the Dongtou sea area to put out a net and catch some leading fish. The current price for leading fish is good, and we’re expecting a great harvest,” one fisherman shared excitedly. “We’re heading to the Zhoushan sea area to catch crabs and shrimps. We hope the first net will be full of a good catch,” another added.

In the days following the opening of the fishing season, fishing boats are expected to bring back the “first net” of seafood. The long-awaited “shrimp soldiers and crab generals” will soon grace the tables of Aojiang residents. To ensure production safety and sustainable fishery resource use during the fishing period, relevant departments in Aojiang have formulated an emergency response plan for “protecting the fishery.” Once the production season begins, the fishery department will strictly enforce regulatory responsibility, territorial responsibility, and the main responsibility, while also building a robust mechanism to combat illegal fishing activities, ensuring safe fishery production.

“We have prepared sufficient supplies, and the preparatory work for the opening of the fishing industry is complete. We are waiting for the government’s order to set sail. We hope to return with a full load and make a good start,” said Captain Dong Qifu. He and his crew had meticulously prepared their fishing boat, repaired nets, and debugge
